Why I Chose to be an Artist

Crayons to brushes

I would imagine every artist has been asked the question at least once in their career, “Why did you choose to become an artist?” I’m not sure it is a choice.

Somehow you float down the palette of life from the first chunky crayon you pick up and scribble on cheap children’s coloring books to beautiful brushes loaded with vibrant paint and drop color onto expensive artist’s grade paper. There may have been many years of experimenting with different mediums since college, the primary role of raising a family or another career path you initially fell into. Perhaps an artist uses painting to speak or shout the thoughts swirling around in their brain. They might want to share with the world what they view as beautiful experiences in their life. Maybe they need to create a revenue stream to pay for their artistic habit. Whatever the reason is for an artist, somewhere along the journey of crayons to tubes of liquid color I decided early in my life that I needed to be creative and paint to not only fill my craving for self-expression but also to be heard.
